“My
Father, he served in the Airforce in Vietnam, fought cancer and won the “Buddy
Cherry” and although he passed in 2012, he was joyful and had a great spirit
all the way until the end. I want to live my life like this 1. A fighter 2.
A happy, joyful person no matter the circumstances.

“Paul Gebbia is my big brother. He dreamed his whole life that he could grow up and be a Marine and serve his country. When he signed up at 18, it broke our Mother’s Heart. But I was always so proud of his sacrifice to protect his country, his family, and his little siblings. Thank you Paul.

“My Hero is my great uncle, Gene Shelton. Uncle Gene was a WWII Veteran. He passed away a few years ago, but saw three years of combat in Europe and was part of the first Allied Forces to Liberate the Concentration Camps. Right before he passed, my family brought him to DC to see the WWII Memorial and Holocaust Museum. Glad he got to experience that. He was one of 7 children and grew up in SW VA in a 2 room house. He and his 3 brothers all serves in WWII and Lived!

“My hero is my grandma. He husband died when she was 30 and she raised 4 kids on her own. She went back and got her high school degree, college, and worked to support them all. She has always been composed, elegant and is the epitomy of dignity even when things get hard!

“My Hero. My Mentor. My Mom! It sounds cliché but I love her with all my heart. She is the strongest person I know. After my father died, she single-handedly held our family together with 3 children, a mortgage, a job, a dog and she put my sister and I through the University of Michigan and is now getting her MBA. She has set a perfect example of what it means to be a great human and a stellar woman. I love her with all my heart and she’s my hero!

“My cousin ‘Johnathan Willis’ has lived the American Dream. From Navy ROTC at NC State to a Tour in Afghanistan, as well as currently working as a Captain for HIS/ Narcotics while raising two kids, loving a wife and two Dogs in San Diego. All he wants is to raise his family in DC where he dreamed of ALL of this as a small town kid from Vienna, VA. I strive to be better than all of that, if it’s even possible. He is my hero and I hope to one day make him Proud.

“Proud older sister of a leader, ‘David J Dererman’. I taught him everything he knows but he really blossomed when he joined the Army. One tour in Iraq completed and he is ready for a lifetime of service. Thanks for taking care of David and providing him an opportunity to become an even more remarkable man.
