In Memory of Brother Gary J. Vasquez

September 29, 2018 will mark the 10 year anniversary of the passing of our chapter brother Gary J. Vasquez. Brother Gary was killed in action while serving in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. According to the Department of Defense, Sgt 1st Class Gary Vasquez died due to wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device (IED) during combat reconnaissance patrol. His comrades, Captain Richard Cliff and Sergeant 1st Class Jamie Nichols were also killed.
Brother Gary served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne). This was his third deployment in support of both Global War on Terror and Afghanistan. Brother Gary earned many awards and decorations including:

Brother Gary "Medio" Vasquez joined Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. at Illinois University on November 20, 1993. He graduated from ISU in 1996 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts. Those near Brother Gary described him as an incredible person. He took the road less traveled by, stood tall by his decisions and did not complain. He was persistent and resilient, dedicated to making sure the world was a better place. Many people knew Brother Gary, but to Gamma Chapter and Sigma Lambda Beta, he was so much more. He was our brother, he was our friend, and he was family.
